[Letter] 1910-1920, Boston, Massachusetts [to] Mr. [Edwin Markham] Dear Mr. Poet, [Staten Island] / William. L. Stidger. 1910-1920.

Letter starts with an outpoor of gratitude; tells him that he is teaching Markham's philosophie to his theological students and he would like all of them to have a copy of his book "The Lincoln Poems" and "THe Man With th Hoe", but they are poor; he wants Markham to send them 50 copies eliminating the retailer's profit; will set no dates after December 14th at Mrs. Markhams request.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
